Sure, going super fast is fun, but where are the eyelets to install racks and fenders? I get that it weighs less than twenty pounds, but can't I put a dyno-hub on it?

You all get to be the first to know: I recant.

I borrowed the lovely Kellie Cochran's Opal Dama after being repeatedly harassed about not racing.* The first thing that stands out about this bicycle is its responsiveness. It is built to do one thing and do it exceptionally well: go fast. As a petite person, riding a tiny, lightweight bicycle really allowed me to power up climbs and race over flats. I was thoroughly convinced before getting on this bicycle that I was a reasonably slow rider. Riding the Opal Dama was definitely a confidence builder that gave me a new perspective of my physical fitness.

Even on the course at Devou Park, which looks like a construction zone in some parts, the Opal Dama rode smoothly and efficiently. While this Opal Dama was not fit to me beyond saddle height, it still handled exceptionally well. Next time I take it out, it will have been fit to me, and I'll have my saddle on it, which will allow for a truly comfortable ride. Having a bicycle fit to you is a total game changer, and it's been a while since I rode a bicycle that wasn't fit exactly to me. I could certainly tell the difference in terms of comfort, but was still impressed with how close the frame came to being a solid fit. Orbea's female-specific geometry, Dama, is spot on.

It was my first race, and I wish I had spent more time in advance getting familiar with the SRAM Force, but now that I'm comfortable with it, the double-tap system is actually sort of satisfying. The frame and fork were incredible, and for any female looking to get a bicycle that will truly maximize their fitness level without going in to the uppermost echelon of price on a female-specific carbon frame, the Opal Dama is an excellent option.

Many thanks go to Kellie for letting me borrow her ride.

*by a certain proprietor of a certain independently owned and operated bike shop.

Cateye Hybrid Solar+Battery Headlight

On a recent ride to Yellow Springs (mostly in the dark), Nate tested out the new Cateye Hybrid light. After charging in the shop window all day, it was ready to go on its first adventure. One of the neater features of the light is that its solar panel shines blue when it is using the solar charged battery, and red when it is using the regular AA battery. Headlights generally burn through batteries pretty quickly, so if you're a dedicated commuter or night-rider, this light is a bargain. If you are concerned about pollutants from batteries, then having a solar powered headlight can go a long ways towards helping reduce hazardous materials put into the waste stream.

Compared side by side with the standard 1 watt Cateye Blaze, the Cateye Hybrid stood out for more than just its eco-friendly, spaceship-esque design: it's just a better light. Its constant mode was bright enough to fully illuminate the path when necessary, and the blinking mode still provided a significant improvement over the Cateye Blaze's visibility from 100 feet. If you're willing to be responsible about recharging it, then this light will significantly reduce your dependence on batteries, and will be the brightest non-battery pack light that we carry.

Civia Loring: Jolly Green Giant

Jess Linz, one of our new mechanics, recently rode the Civia Loring on Queen City Bike's Bike and Dine. The Loring served as the official support vehicle. Jess hauled fifty t-shirts, a stand pump, tubes, tire levers, and a tool kit. I caught up with Jess as she was hauling

Katie: Jess, what were your major impressions of this bicycle?

Jess: It actually was really easy to manuever, whether I was riding or walking it. Even with a heavy load, it was a stable and comfortable ride. It's a heavy duty bicycle, and was surprisingly nimble. The wide tires provided for a comfortable, cushioned ride. The bamboo basket, rack, and fenders are beautiful, too.

Katie: How far of a ride was Bike and Dine?

Jess: It was about twenty miles, with some significant hills. The Loring definitely had a lot more versatility than a single speed city bicycle. It showed some serious acceleration for the style of bicycle it is. I'm really impressed with the smoothness of the shifting, and the internally geared hub really simplifies things.

Katie: Who would you recommend this bicycle for?

Jess: Everyone. Anyone could ride it. It's a very friendly bicycle. It loves carrying loads, going on casual rides, tackling pot-hole filled roads. Anyone who wants to replace their car with a bicycle should get this bicycle. It's a car-bike.

Katie: What kind of car?

Jess: It is the Volvo of bicycles.

Katie: Anything else you'd like to say about this bike?

Jess: The color is awesome. It's like the Jolly Green Giant turned into the friendliest, prettiest bicycle imaginable. Also, someday, that Brooks saddle is going to feel AMAZING. It will fit your contours so nicely.

Orbea Opal: There Aren't Enough Adjectives

Nate took the Opal out for a spin at the St. Leon race last weekend. He placed fourth in the fives, a personal best. Here's an excerpt from his post race interview:

Katie: Did the Opal give you a competitive advantage today?

Nate: Yes. Yes it did. It was comfortable, so even on these rough roads, my body didn't feel like it was getting beaten up . The Campy 11 speed gave me exactly the right gearing. No matter if I was climbing up the hill or hammering a fast pace line over rollers and directly into a headwind, I was able to maintain a consistent cadence. I thought Campy 11 speed was a gimmick--it's not. I can't believe I haven't tried this before.

Katie: Tell me about your wheel set.

Nate: Woah. The Reynolds Assault carbon clinchers were amazing. They dragged me up the hill, leading the pack. They were so light and swift that I had to hold back. Furthermore, they sliced through the headwind with their aerodynamic engineering.

Katie: Like a hot knife through butter?

Nate: Yes.

Katie: Summarize your experience in a sentence.

Nate: It was like riding a laser guided lightening bolt. From outer space.

Katie: I'm pretty sure that's impossible, and two sentences.

Nate: No. It was life changing. It was opal-uent.

Katie: That's the worst pun I've ever heard. What's wrong with you?

Nate: I'm getting back on this bicycle. This time Reser Bicycle has just received our first shipment of Swiftwick socks. They contacted me last August and I had never heard of them so they sent me a few samples. As soon as they arrived Marty was stoked because he already had several pairs and loves them for his world record attempt stair-running activities. I've been wearing them and I have to say they are now my favorite socks too. Swiftwick is a Tennessee company and the socks are made just over the border in North Carolina, but in a different factory from the Defeet socks that are made the same state and so popular in cycling. Go USA!

Swiftwick does three things to set them apart from other socks. First off, they are stitched at 200 needles per inch which makes them extra comfy and durable. Second they are available in two different materials, Olefin or Merino wool. The Olefin fabric is "a Nobel-prize winning synthetic fiber" which has low friction, is an environmentally conscious material, dries quickly and floats! The big deal here is improved durability over regular Coolmax socks. Olefin is also marketed under the name Tyvek® which you might recognize is used in those rip-resistant envelopes.

The Merino wool Swiftwick socks have a lot of the same wicking properties but are also naturally resistant to stank. Reser Bicycle Outfitters has a variety of both for your cycling needs. We believe that together—as a community of cyclists—we can make the landscape greener, the air more breathable and improve the quality of life for all. We’re working to promote and expand that community with civiacycles.com and Greenlightride.com. My advice to anyone wanting to bike is find a bike you like to ride, get a light one. If you don't like to ride it, or if it is to hard to ride, you won't ride it and will not get any benefit from it. It will just sit in your garage and gather dust. I have put my main comments up on the top of this page, and specific comments underneath the photos below.

      Am I a weight weenie?
I have to admit I like carbon. It is lighter and stronger at the same time. BMC takes traditional bike carbon one step further with carbon nano tubes. When I first heard about it, I thought it was some kind of marketing gimic, but no, nano tubes infused into the frame add strength and lower the weight.

The new Boeing jets are made out of carbon using the latest in carbon nano technology. You can read about Boeing's use of nano technology here. I recommend carbon for anyone, and if you can get the nano tubes, all the better.

Does it live up to its hype?
The bike is definitely stiffer, and although I am no pro even I can tell a difference. You probably can too. As soon as you step on it, it goes. Surprisingly though it is still comfortable to ride. That is one of the first things I noticed when I got on the bike is how quiet and smooth it is.

      What about the wheels?
The Mavic R-sys wheels add considerably to the overall performance of the bike. They add to stiffness, power transmission, and comfort all at the same time. I rode a BMC with some other great Mavic wheels, then with the R-sys. I do like the wheels. I wouldn't put them on a time trial bike as they perhaps are not as aerodynamic, but they are great for all-around riding, and especially for hills. I'm not too worried about the aero aspect. When I get a call to join team BMC I am sure they will provide the BMC TT01 for time trialing.

      What about the components?
Campagnolo Record. As far as I am concerned, this is top notch. I have some comments below.

      Service and setup
You need to get a bike from someone who will fit you. A professional bike fitting is a must. I recommend Reser Bicycle Outfitters in Newport, KY. Greg measured me, put everything into the computer, and used that as a starting point. We ordered the bike to spec, although they have most all the componenents on hand to do build or adapt anything you need. When the bike came in and they built it up, Greg put me on the bike and wouldn't send me out the door without tweaking everything.

Later, when I started pouring on the miles I was having a little knee discomfort he refitted me and tweaked a few things and my knee started to improve. Seeing the guys on our weekly rides, Greg always keeps in touch with my comfort and success. Matt in the service department makes good on their lifetime free tune-ups, not that many have been needed. Sarai fit me in the shoes and clips I needed to fit my extra-wide feet. Jason answered the 5 million questions I had. You don't get that kind of service online. (I would know, since I operate an Internet business!)

   Personally speaking....
I biked everywhere as a kid. Unfortunately I never heard of racing bikes. Back in the '60s when I was a teenager I was about the only one I knew interested in healthy pursuits instead of all the other garbage going on. But without the Internet it was hard to do research, and I never knew there were others interested in bikes, particularly for racing.

Fast forward 4 decades now I am glad I stayed away from all the so-called "liberating" lifestyles as I am healthier than most my age. However, I have been pretty sedentary as I spend my work hours programming computers. A year ago my doctor said my cholesterol was too high and he was going to prescribe medication. I told him no, I would take up biking instead. After a year I have lost over 20 pounds. I will get my cholesterol checked again in September and will let you know how I do.

   Here are some photos...
I have taken some photos for you to look at. Click on them for larger images. Check back in September to see how I did with my cholesterol!

BMC SLC01 ProMachine. I like carbon. Altogether it weighs about 14.5 lbs.

This massive bottom bracket gives you a rock solid platform for you to do your stuff.

Another shot of the heart of the machine.

Massive chainstays add to stiffness and give you more power. But guess what? They are light!

The "T" shape of the top bar dramatically increases rigidity. I like having the cables internally routed.

The downtube morphs 2 opposing hexagons for stiffness while preserving lightness.

Campagnolo record has a dual pull on the front and single pull brake on the back. I thought it would be better to have dual on both, but I was wrong.

Single pull on the back eliminates rear wheel skidding. I grab both brakes, squeeze hard and it brakes great. It's good to have confidence in your brakes.

Record Ultra-Torque carbon crankset transmits power with a suprisingly light crank.

Carbon bottle cage covers the "nano" graphic. Carbon nano tubes infused into the frame are an order of magnitude stronger.

FSA carbon stem is rock solid, and the aero flat bar is very comfortable. It is so much more comfortable than my previous round handlebar that I didn't feel a need to wrap the top part.

Spiffy red carbon courtesy of BMC.

No point gaining weight here, so Easton's carbon seatpost is in order.

R-sys wheels have carbon tubes for spokes. They continue to build bikes with these four words in mind and it is obvious when you get your first feel of one of their hand crafted bicycles. Starting with the development of the first wide tire bike to come to life in Canada in 1982, Rocky Mountain has continued a tradition of producing bikes for people who love to ride.

Not only do they have a rigorous engineering process but they also have a manufacturing process that is ISO certified. That means that you get the same high quality product every time. They also outfit every bike with hand built wheels straight from their factory in Canada. Rocky Mountain has the longest hand wheel building assembly line in the world. Wheels are often the first upgrade on a stock bike but not on a Rocky Mountain. Hand built wheels come standard equipment on all models.

So, it's a great company, what about the ride?

Well, we all know they make some amazing mountain bikes. The ETSX is equipped with adjustable travel and a full suspension design that literally propels you forward when engaged. This is the bicycle that has repeatedly powered the Rocky Mountain team to the win the Trans Rockies Race. And let's not forget about the Rocky Mountain Element which was named Mountain Bike Magazine's "07 Cross Country Bike of the Year". Add to the list the new Flatline downhill rig (which I am sure Jason is soon to tell you all about) and the Slayer and you have a full line up of off-road ready machines for whatever your choice of terrain. But don't forget Rocky Mountain is more than just a mountain bike company, they also make urban assault bicycles and some of the best commuters on the market!

Stop in for a test ride today!

Transition Blindside Review

I just found this review for the Blindside on littermag.com - check it out!

Orbea Diva

With all of the fantastic reviews available on the Orbea Orca I was pretty anxious to test out the women's version known as the "Diva". Since the road is not my first choice of riding terrain, I've always given new road bikes a little less attention than new mountain bikes.

The Diva was different, from the time I saw it emerge from the box my feet were ready to pedal. I not only wanted to test it's speed, agility and comfort but I wanted an outfit to match! What I mean to say is that the bike is beautiful, a work of art. I had seen and ridden the Orca and admired its crisp lines and graceful shaping but this one was made for me!

To be specific Orbea is very conscious of every rider that gets on their bikes. Unlike many companies, Orbea designs each frame and fork size to have the same amazing ride as the next. For women, the Orbea Diva and Dama series is not just designed with a shorter top tube but an entirely women's specific set of geometry. To go beyond that, Orbea has even chosen a different carbon for the Diva than for the Orca that is optimal for a woman's weight and power. And outfitting the frame with the just as sleek Campagnolo equipment ensures a solid, comfortable grip on the shifters and brakes even for smaller hands.

At this point I feel it is important to add that although most women will benefit from a women's specific bicycle, that is not always the case. We are all uniquely proportioned and it is necessary to get a professional bicycle fitting to determine your personal needs. But don't worry, you can leave that to us, we provide a full professional fitting with all our road bikes.

But what about the ride? I had definitely been impressed with Orbea's Aqua Dama, the aluminum and carbon frame for women that also uses the "nerve" technology known to Orbea, could the Diva be that special?

In just a few quick pedal strokes I knew it was. My first ride was just around the neighborhood, that was all I needed to know that this was the best ride I had ever been on. The acceleration was phenomenal! It handled like a sports car with the smoothness of a Cadillac. I was ruined. For the first time I have ridden a road bike that I don't want to get off of. This bike will fly, but more importantly it is the most comfortable, stable, and confidence inspiring ride of a lifetime, and it can be had everyday.

And like Matt and his BMC, check back for updates as my very own Orbea Diva is soon to be on its way. Who knows, my mountain bike might just stay a little cleaner this year.

5.10 impact

If you ride downhill, freeride, dirt jumps or skate parks you know you need your feet stuck tight to the pedals at all times, except of course when your bike disagrees with you on which way you should be going. It's when you need to get away from that tumbling piece of metal that being clipped in seems to have been the wrong choice. So what's the solution flat shoes just don't stick that good especially when it gets dirty, wet and muddy, and you know getting wrapped up in your bike hurts just as bad as the ground. Well the answer to this problem comes from a family owned company that has made its self known through rock climbing and there proprietary stealth rubber compound. This compound has become so popular in fact that 99.9% of all performance shoe resoling is done with stealth rubber.
When the company designed the Impact shoe for mountain biking sales were slim due to cross country riders were all getting into spd's at the time. Sales were so bad in fact they nearly stopped producing the shoe a few years ago, but then the emerging freeride and downhill scene got ahold of them. The shoe being super sturdy and able to grab the pedals in all conditions along with 5.10's shock absorbing insoles are just what these bikers had been looking for. These shoes are now worn by world cup downhill champs, freeride legends and dirt jump jam winners all over the world.
I laced on a pair of these a while ago and will never ride anything else again. Sturdy and sticky is the only way to describe these shoes, no matter how high how fast or how muddy i get my feet are always were I left them. Also they have everything a good shoe should have:

sturdy insole

leather upper

s1 stealth rubber sole

world cup stripes

an outline of Australia

and snakeskin

oh yeh they come in black to

Lazer Genesis Helmet

I've had my Lazer helmet just over a year now, and I really love it. Having ridden it only a hand full of times its hard to say exactly what this bike is capable of, but right off the bat I can tell you that it is built to take a beating. With 150mm(5.75") of rear travel huge CNC machined linkages combined with large Swiss sealed bearings and a bottom bracket that appears to have girth rivaling that of a DH bike but on a surprisingly light and very fast pedaling bike. The Superstroke utilizes what BMC calls VPS suspension design which is essentially the same as e13's world renowned DW link. This feature separates pedaling forces and braking and rider inertia from suspension movement making it climb and accelerate with a tight stiff feel while still absorbing the terrain.

All the bikes we carry have been subjected to a "staff review." This involves Jason and at least one other staff member pretty much staring at a bike for an hour or so discussing its intended use, strengths and weaknesses, and in the case of the Superstroke we came up with build options ranging from lightweight cross-country to a build where we could race Downhill on a sub 35lb bike. The build we chose for this bike is perfect for the do-it-all mindset using some of the toughest and lightest parts available, but if you want to aim the bike in another direction we will build you one that fits your needs. If you're in the market for any type of mountain bike you really have to come check out the Superstroke 01 you can't miss it, it's the sweet orange and chrome bike when you walk in the shop. Look for a more in-depth review this spring once I've put in some time on the trails as I will be buying one.

Blk Mrkt Mob

After borrowing one a trail/park bike from Matt for a while, I decided to get my own, and thought there could be nothing cooler than the Mob from Blk Mrkt. My decision was based off of the pedigree of the frame; it's made by S&M for Carter Holland's 26 inch company. I've always felt really comfortable riding S&M's frames like the Dirt Jump Classic, so I thought it would be a safe bet. And hey, there's nothing wrong with American made!

There are two dropout types available, I went with the horizontal because I wanted to run single speed for park riding, and figured that a Saint derailleur specific to horizontal dropouts could be installed later. The bike is designed to work in a variety of situations including dirt, skateparks, street and 4X.

Riding it at Ollies Skatepark in Florence, I immediately felt more at ease and capable. By the end of my first ride, I was able to do some taller lunges and getting 180's down-pat. I even took it with me on a trip to Brian Head, Utah and did a few large decent trails which made me regret not installing a front brake as I overshot some switchbacks. All in all the bike was very easy to control and would roll over anything, even with the 100mm Manitou up front, due in part to the 69 degree head-tube angle. I did crash into a huge rock behind hidden in a field as friends watched and laughed, but the good ol' US powdercoat finish didn't even scratch to the steel.

I did set up another Mob for Brandon for the Utah trip with the horizontal dropouts and Saint rear derailluer, which works great. He did opt for front and rear brakes, which wasn't a bad call as he was able to dust me on the decents.

Product Reviews!

So here it is, the new website is taking shape thanks to Eclectic Studios and it has all kinds of snazzy features that we dreamt up.

This area will feature reviews and initial impressions of the new products we receive.
